TAKE ME HOME
Indeed, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. It is a big world out there that a moment to get to know, love and respect oneself is the first step to make it physically, emotionally and spiritually in this random world. We can compare our own quest of self discovering and fulfillment to Odysseus’ twenty years of journey away from home and loved ones. As we grow up, we experience the true meaning of life and it is not always easy and relaxing. Some parts of life are meant to be difficult and challenging to prepare us in greater tests ahead. In his adventure, Odysseus faced many ups and downs which made the heart of this epic. His story and our own journey and journeys to be begins with a choice: one that is usually difficult to make but is also the only ticket for the way home.
It was a painful decision for Odysseus to agree to lead the war in the city of Troy. He knew the consequences and suffering it will bring forth to his life and his family’s. Knowing it is the only way home to agree and get it over with, he finally decided to join with the mind set that he will succeed and return safely. During his voyages, he endured in a an exhausting trip: fighting in a ten year war, bumping into a giant hostile cyclops, being lost at sea, and held captive by sexual goddesses. He faced these tests with only one goal and that is returning safely home to his loving wife and son. With perseverance and help of some good friends he met along the way, he finally returns back home and meets his families and friends anew. Upon his return to his hometown he receives his real award for this long sojourn. Nothing can beat the feeling of being back home seeing familiar faces, meeting his son for the first time in twenty years, rekindling relationships with his faithful wife and feeling the warmth of good friends around. These are the real reward for a man of honor and it is something money cannot buy. This adventure made Odysseus the man he really is: brave, determined, loving and powerful.
Our own journey, we could say, is synonymous to his. Like Odysseus, we can accomplish the same outcome with the same perseverance and the same attitude he possessed. Our journey also starts with a significant decision and it is just a matter of making the right one. Do we want to take risks and endure painful path to achieve the success we want where everything will turn out okay in the end anyway? Or do we want to play it safe, not taking chances and live a bland life? A wise man like Odysseus would go for taking the risky adventure and face consequences. It is these hardships that makes up a strong-willed, determined and fulfilled human being. Success does not happen over night. One has to work hard for it and even challenge themselves to find the real meaning of their life’s conquest. After the wild adventure is where we find our true peace and serenity which makes us feel safe and at home. It will also make us feel powerful, knowledgeable, compassionate and accomplished.
Odysseus’ long battle away from home gave a deeper meaning to his life and personality. He faced whatever lies ahead of him, good or bad, just to get safely back home. With a knowledge of how harsh the battle he will go through away from home, he still chose to depart. More than benefiting himself, he knew it was going to benefit his beloved countrymen. It was that choice, of going to the war, that gave Odysseus the true essence of the word “success.” Our own journey is identical to his if we also posses the same attitude. We do not know what our future brings. Will it be dreadful or will it be pleasant? The necessary step is for us to determine and to make it happen. In that important step though, is where the decision making comes from. It is this brilliant step that will get us to the right path, make us see the randomness of the world and finally takes us safely home.

The teacher's note says : "not as polished as i would like it to be, but a very well thought out essay."
